The programme is composed of two routes where participants are split into two groups: The nước ngọt (freshwater) route: This route ****traces metabolic abundance through interior of Hậu Giang, a colonial canal still carries rice barges a century after it was cut. Further along, a community has spent two decades turning what looks like waste: pig manure, crop residue, and invasive weeds that clog the canal itself, into fuel, soil and, into income.
The nước lợ-nước mặn (brackish-to-salt) route: This route follows metabolic abundance downstream into Trà Vinh. Here, abundance changes shape rather than disappearing. Rice and shrimp alternate on the same plot, calibrated to a tidal salinity cycle that turns twice a year. Khmer adaptive knowledge finds its abundance not in the part of the coconut that salt has already taken, but in the part that remains.
The Delta and two routes contain both tensions between Thuận Thiên (adaptation) and Kiểm Soát (control). In this way we explore metabolic abundance in the Delta, which is both generative and precarious simultaneously. Both routes carry the same aim, to transform 'circular design’ in ways that reflect and embody the teachings by the waters, lands and peoples. What can we sense-feel-respond and participate through this abundance? What might be ‘dowsed’ to attune our bodies with a force with its own agency?
Cảm Ứng Digital Dowsing as method
CDW's fieldwork is designed around a participatory, embodied commitment. In Vietnamese, cảm means sensing-feeling; ứng means responding. The compound cảm ứng names the inseparability of perception and response to "read" shifting conditions – tidal flows, soil moisture, the colour of the water, the behaviour of fish – and trace the responses to the fleeting moments reflexively. This approach aims to resonate with what Delta communities have enacted for generations.
